Core Values/Goals/Strategies
2002-2007

Core Value 1- The faculty are dedicated to excellence in teaching using a student centered approach.
Goal 1.1	To enhance HS faculty competencies regarding innovative and advanced educational technologies as they apply to student learning and overall curriculum needs.
Strategy 1.1.1.	Each Health Science faculty member will contact CIS and/or COHP Technology to reformat all graduate and selected undergraduate courses to be web-assisted.
Strategy 1.1.2.	All MHSA courses and selected MPH courses (Epidemiology, Health Care Concepts and Delivery Systems, Survey of Gerontology and Healthy Aging) will be web accessible.
Goal 1.2	To enhance the breadth of HS faculty capabilities so that greater options for student learning and overall professional development for both faculty and students are enhanced.
Strategy 1.2.1.	A faculty mentoring system will be in place in the Health Science department to enhance sharing of faculty experience.
Strategy 1.2.2.	The MPH Research Methods course will be reformatted to include both qualitative and quantitative methodological concepts to better reflect changing trends within the profession.
Goal 1.3	To promote an environment which encourages faculty to present courses in a responsive and dynamic manner that integrates both didactic and experiential learning (i.e., theory and practice).
Strategy 1.3.1.	There will be an increase, above the current level, of community involvement in all appropriate Health Science Courses.
Strategy 1.3.2.	There will be an increase, above the current level, of collaborative teaching in appropriate Health Science Courses.
Strategy 1.3.3.	There will be an increase, above the current level, of community- based learning opportunities for students in appropriate Health Science Courses.
Strategy 1.3.4.	A community-based mentorship program will be established for Health Science students.
Strategy 1.3.5.	A graduate course, Epidemiology of Cancer, will be developed. This course will be offered to appropriate AASU students as well as medical students/personnel in the AASU service area.
Core Value 2- Faculty participate in scholarly activities as a foundation for providing improvements in clinical practice, the advancement of professional knowledge and the improvement of instruction and learning.
Goal 2.1	To achieve/maintain accreditation in the MHSA and MPH programs.
Strategy 2.1.1.	A proposal will be developed to change the program of study for the MHSA program (i.e., it will be increased from 40 to 48 hours).
Strategy 2.1.2.	Any significant modifications to the MPH or MHSA programs will be based on specific program accreditation criteria and will be reflective of critical trends in the fields.
Goal 2.2	To promote a positive environment for the enhancement of faculty scholarly activity while balancing teaching and service expectations.
Strategy 2.2.1.	The Health Science Department will promote collaborative research partnerships via sharing faculty research interests with faculty at AASU and other institutions including health care facilities in the service area.
Goal 2.3	To explore opportunities to integrate scholarship into teaching and learning as a fundamental mission of the department.
Strategy 2.3.1.	The MPH Research Methods course will be reformatted to include both qualitative and quantitative methodological concepts to better reflect changing trends within the profession.
Strategy 2.3.2.	The Health Science Department will immediately begin to incorporate appropriate, relevant data sets into courses.
Strategy 2.3.3.	There will be an increase in student participation in the AASU Student Research Day.
Strategy 2.3.4.	Relevant material/activities from the Cancer Initiative will be incorporated into appropriate HS coursework.
Core Value 3-The College of Health Professions values active communication with the service areas and the professional communities. This includes communication not only for understanding the needs of the service area and the professional communities but also for publicizing educational opportunities available at AASU. Coupled with this is a commitment of the faculty to distinction in community/professional service as well as responsiveness to the needs of the service area and professional community.
Goal 3.1	To explore opportunities to enhance departmental participation in Continuing Education (CE) offerings from an interdisciplinary perspective to the AASU campus and to the AASU service area.
Strategy 3.1.1.	The HS Department will develop new CE programs/offerings. Possible new offerings may include tumor registry training and data reporting mechanisms.
Strategy 3.1.2.	The HS Department will develop new CE offerings for local and regional health care systems.
Strategy 3.1.3.	After completing a CE needs assessment, the HS Department will modify appropriate existing courses for CE delivery.
Goal 3.2	To enhance program accessibility for "location bound" students through innovative distributed learning modalities.
Strategy 3.2.1.	Each Health Science faculty member will contact CIS and/or COHP Technology to reformat all graduate and selected undergraduate courses to be web-assisted.
Strategy 3.2.2.	All MHSA courses and selected MPH courses (Epidemiology, Health Care Concepts and Delivery Systems, Survey of Gerontology and Healthy Aging) will be web accessible.

Strategy 3.3.1.	The HS Department will continue the student practicum experience.
Strategy 3.3.2.	The HS Department will continue to collaborate with the AASU Public Relations Department to market/advertise the HS programs.
Strategy 3.3.3.	The HS Department will continue to focus its research and service activities on applied research activities in the AASU service area.
Strategy 3.3.4.	A graduate course, Epidemiology of Cancer, will be developed. This course will be offered to appropriate AASU students as well as medical students/personnel in the AASU service area.
Core Value 4-The Faculty believe that it is important to examine and, where appropriate, implement innovative strategies in education, scholarship and community service.
Goal 4.1	To continue to critically assess and adopt appropriate, innovative approaches to teaching, scholarship and service.
Strategy 4.1.1.	Each Health Science faculty member will contact CIS and/or COHP Technology to reformat all graduate and selected undergraduate courses to be web-assisted.
Strategy 4.1.2.	All MHSA courses and selected MPH courses (Epidemiology, Health Care Concepts and Delivery Systems, Survey of Gerontology and Healthy Aging) will be web accessible.

Goal 4.2	To continue to explore new curricular options at both the degree and certification levels to meet ever-changing professional needs of our service area.
Strategy 4.2.1.	The HS Department will develop new CE programs/offerings. Possible new offerings may include tumor registry training and data reporting mechanisms.
	The HS Department will develop new CE offerings for local and regional health care systems. After completing a CE needs assessment, the HS Department will modify appropriate existing courses for CE delivery. Some CE offerings may evolve into certificate programs or contribute to existing certificate programs.
Strategy 4.2.2.	Any significant modifications to the MPH or MHSA programs will be based on specific program accreditation criteria and will be reflective of critical trends in the fields. Beginning fall 2002, the HS Department will begin a comprehensive course review. Programmatic/course changes will be made as a result of this review.
Strategy 4.2.3.	Depending on the development of the Cancer Centers of Excellence and other Cancer Initiative Programs, the MPH program may develop appropriate certificate programs designed to facilitate the overall initiatives associated with these programs (e.g. tumor registry training, etc)
