Core Values/Goals/Strategies
2002-2007

Core Value 1- The faculty are dedicated to excellence in teaching using a student centered approach.

 
   

Goal 1.1

Our unit will continue to integrate theory and practice in the curriculum using a problem based approach, where appropriate, to provide the highest quality of education to our students and to stimulate critical thinking skills necessary for practice and leadership in respiratory care.

   

Strategy 1.1.1.

Expand the role of problem based learning by developing additional cases to support the curriculum content in senior level courses: RESP 4110, 4120 and 4210.

Strategy 1.1.2.

Increase the use of evidenced based practice and clinical research in the curriculum by incorporating concepts into our clinical practica.

Strategy 1.1.3.

Refine and expand our senior research project done in conjunction with RESP 4220. Students will be encouraged to participate in the AASU and COHP research presentations next spring. Students will be required to develop a benchmarking data base as part of this project.

Strategy 1.1.4.

Maintain graduate pass rates 10% or more above the national pass rates on the NBRC credentialing exams. During the next year we will pursue approval to award a Certificate of Associate Degree Equivalency from our accrediting agency, CoARC. This certificate will be awarded during the last semester of the program.

Strategy 1.1.5.

Maintain full accreditation status based on our annual report to CoARC. To extend full accreditation status we must be in compliance with the 14 threshold criteria developed by CoARC.

   

Goal 1.2

Our unit will seek faculty development opportunities to enable faculty to assess and improve their teaching skills.

   

Strategy 1.2.1.

Develop a faculty development plan to expand the understanding and use of technology in the classroom. This will be accomplished by taking advantage of technology workshops and continuing ed programs.

Strategy 1.2.2.

Encourage and reward faculty who earn specialty credentials in the professional arena.

Strategy 1.2.3.

Provide financial support for faculty to attend 1 national or regional level conference during 2002-03.

   

Goal 1.3

Our unit will evaluate faculty workloads in order to provide appropriate assignments that maximize faculty effectiveness.

   

Strategy 1.3.1.

Our unit will continue to monitor faculty teaching loads which meet or exceed the maximum level established by the COHP.

Strategy 1.3.2.

Our unit will continue to search for a qualified part time instructor to teach upper level courses.

   

Goal 1.4

Our unit will monitor professional workforce issues and explore ways to be responsive to workforce needs.

   

Strategy 1.4.1.

Our unit will closely monitor national, state and regional workforce issues.

Strategy 1.4.2.

Our unit will liaison with professionals in the community regarding curricular issues and seek input from our departmental advisory committee.

Strategy 1.4.3.

Our unit will continue to administer the CoARC graduate and employer surveys as part of our outcome assessment system.

   

Core Value 2- Faculty participate in scholarly activities as a foundation for providing improvements in clinical practice, the advancement of professional knowledge and the improvement of instruction and learning.

   

Goal 2.1

Our unit will maintain an environment that promotes scholarly inquiry, publications and presentations.

   

Strategy 2.1.1.

Promote the philosophy that clinical research and the scholarship of teaching are two equally important parts of scholarship.

Strategy 2.1.2.

Assist faculty in preparing a plan for scholarly activity as part of their faculty mission. During 2002-03 the faculty will develop a plan for scholarship.

Strategy 2.1.3.

Encourage and reward interdepartmental and interdisciplinary collaboration. During 2002-03 we will explore the potential for a collaborative clinical/research project with another department.

Strategy 2.1.4.

Promote research and collaboration with local health care systems. During 2002-03 we will continue to refine and expand our collaborative quality control study with Memorial University Health (RESP 4220). We will also explore potential for a collaborative project with St Joseph’s/Candler Health System.

Strategy 2.1.5.

Promote a COHP Scholarship day. During 2002-03 our senior students will be encouraged to participate in poster presentations during AASU Research Week and the COHP scholarship day. Students will also present their project to our community affiliates.

   

Goal 2.2

Our unit will continue to integrate scholarship into educational activities to enable students to become good consumers of research in their professional endeavors.

   

Strategy 2.2.1.

Ensure that students participate in the AASU and COHP research activities.

Strategy 2.2.2.

Continue to require curricular and clinical activities that involve students in research and develop their ability to critique research and incorporate the results into clinical practice.

Strategy 2.2.3.

Continue to support student attendance at local and/or national conferences.

   

Core Value 3-The College of Health Professions values active communication with the service areas and the professional communities. This includes communication not only for understanding the needs of the service area and the professional communities but also for publicizing educational opportunities available at AASU. Coupled with this is a commitment of the faculty to distinction in community/professional service as well as responsiveness to the needs of the service area and professional community.

   

Goal 3.1

Our unit will work to increase awareness of respiratory care to recruit students.

   

Strategy 3.1.1.

We will actively participate in recruitment activities throughout southeast Georgia.

Strategy 3.1.2.

We will continue to evaluate and revise our link to the university website and monitor activity.

Strategy 3.1.3.

We will continue to host at least one open house for high school science classes each semester.

   

Goal 3.2

Our unit will maintain an interactive relationship with the respiratory care community to assess education needs and provide professional/continuing education.

   

Strategy 3.2.1.

We will maintain active communication with local and state organizations concerning opportunities for collaboration.

Strategy 3.2.2.

We will assess the continuing education needs of the respiratory community and offer CE programs as needed.

Strategy 3.2.3.

We will promote faculty involvement in community advisory boards and councils.

   

Strategy 3.2.4.

We will continue to administer and report data from our annual employer and graduate surveys.

Strategy 3.2.5.

We will encourage faculty involvement with the local professional community.

   

Goal 3.3

Our unit will liaison with other organizations to determine and address the health care needs of the region.

   

Strategy 3.3.1.

Our unit will work with community organizations such as the COC to provide workshops on health related issues and subjects.

Strategy 3.3.2.

We will seek input from advisory committees, professional communities and health care providers on service needs of the region.

Strategy 3.3.3.

We will continue to develop articulation agreements with A.S. respiratory programs throughout the state.

   

Goal 3.4

Our unit will seek to enhance its reputation and visibility as a leader in community service.

   

Strategy 3.4.1.

We will continue our commitment to excellence in teaching and quality graduates.

Strategy 3.4.2.

We will be actively involved in community service activities which improve the quality of life for disabled individuals.

Strategy 3.4.3.

We will continue to recruit and mentor student volunteers from the health professions to participate in community service activities.

   

Core Value 4-The Faculty believe that it is important to examine and, where appropriate, implement innovative strategies in education, scholarship and community service.
